About Be Safe
The story behind the work
Be Safe grew from a simple observation: most of what people are taught about personal safety does not hold up under real stress.
Complex techniques fail when adrenaline strips away fine motor control. Strategies that depend on size or strength exclude most people. And any approach that encourages staying and engaging, rather than leaving, increases risk.
Be Safe was built on a different foundation. The programmes focus on what actually remains effective when it matters -- awareness, clear decision-making, and the ability to create enough space to escape. That is the entire objective. Not dominance. Not confrontation. Escape.
This philosophy has been tested across years of delivery in schools, organisations, and international settings. It informs every session Be Safe delivers.
Decades of experience
Be Safe programmes are delivered by instructors with decades of experience in personal safety, control, and conflict management.
The work has spanned a wide range of environments: UK independent and maintained schools, corporate teams, faith-based organisations, charities, and groups supporting vulnerable and at-risk people.
Internationally, the Escape to Gain Safety programme has been delivered in Canada, training church missionaries, and in the United States, supporting organisations working with victims of human trafficking.
Within UK schools, Be Safe has provided sustained, recurring delivery since 2019, including annual provision at Downe House School as part of their student wellbeing programme.
The Lost Art of Control
The philosophy underpinning Be Safe is explored in the book The Lost Art of Control, written by Be Safe's founder.
The book examines how control, decision-making, and simplicity hold up when stress strips away complexity. It asks what remains effective when the pressure is real -- and makes the case that less, applied well, will always outperform more.
These principles directly inform every Be Safe programme. The book is not a training manual; it is the thinking behind the training.
The Lost Art of Control is currently in preparation. If you would like to be notified when the book is available, please register your interest.

Be Safe was founded by Clive Elliott, an instructor with decades of experience in personal safety, control, and conflict management.
The work behind Be Safe has been shaped by long-term teaching across a wide range of environments, including international delivery, work with vulnerable and at-risk groups, and sustained provision within UK schools. The emphasis throughout has always been on what remains effective under pressure -- not technique for its own sake.
Rather than focusing on fighting or physical dominance, Clive built Be Safe around simplicity, clarity, and restraint. The goal is to help people recognise risk early, make better decisions, and prioritise disengagement and escape to safety.
All sessions are delivered in a calm, professional, and supportive manner, with safeguarding and wellbeing at the centre of delivery.
